Minister of Defence of Georgia pays an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan. Irakli Alasania has already held meetings with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his Azeri counterpart, Colonel-General Safar Abiyev.
At the meeting with President, Georgian Minister of Defence outlined that one of the main priorities of the Georgian Government is to deepen cooperation with its neighbor countries that leads to security and stability in the region.
A meeting between the delegations was led in an extended format, after which the leaders of defence ministries held a personal meeting. The sides focused on enhancement of friendly relationship between Azerbaijan and Georgia and stressed importance of further military cooperation. Irakli Alasania thanked his Azeri counterpart for the support demonstrated towards Georgia. Minister of Defence of Georgia underlined significance of deeper bilateral relationship for regional security.
The issues of participation of Georgian and Azeri military contingents in the international security mission in Afghanistan and rendering of assistance to the Afghan National Security Forces in the post-ISAF period were discussed at the meeting. The sides referred to cooperation in the field of military education. Within the NATO Support Agency (NSPA) Project “Georgia III”, one of the Engineer Companies of GAF was trained in Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA). The Georgian side, in its turn, offers Azeri military to undergo winter and summer courses in Sachkhere Mountain Training School.
Following the meeting Defence Ministers of Georgia and Azerbaijan approved Bilateral Cooperation Plan 2013.
Today, the Georgian MoD delegation has laid a wreath on the tomb of national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Alirza oghlu Aliyev.
Within the two day visit to Azerbaijan meetings are planned with Azerbaijan Minister of Defence Industry Yavar Jamalov and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
An official visit of Minister of Defence of Georgia in Azerbaijan will be over on March 19.
