THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR MINE AWARENESS AND ASSISTANCE IN MINE ACTION WAS COMMEMORATED

The International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action was declared by the UN General Assembly and observed in 2006 for the first time. It calls for continued efforts by states, with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations, to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines andexplosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of thecivilian population, or an impediment to social and economic development at the national and local levels. As a rule, since 2006, a number of events are organized to commemorate April 4 - the International Day for Mine Awarenessand Assistance in Mine Action throughout country as well as in ANAMA HQs in Baku and in its Regional Offices. Different types of meetings, trainings and ceremonies, whith participation of district authority and mass media representatives were arranged by regional managers, team leaders, supervisors in operational sites and by Education Department coordinators in all MRE program targeted schools to observe this Day in mine/ERW affected regions. This Day is noted by the teachers and students in 1185 schools of 26 districts, and by the ‘MRE Committee’ volunteers, heads of municipalities and executive authority boards in 126 communities. ANAMA’s two implementing NGO partners - ‘Relief’ Azerbaijan and International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF) - are also active in supporting these events in the districts where clearance activities are being conducted. ANAMA representatives visited schools, hospitals, farms in communities, met residents, informed them on operations and talked about the significance of this Day. They set up MRE billboards, mine warning signs in hazardous areas, met mine victims, conducted MRE lessons at local schools, gave interviews to local newspapers/radios and distributed awareness materials among population in the targeted districts. Along with this, a meeting for some TV company representatives was organized at ANAMA HQs. ANAMA MRE department manager, Mr.Musa Jalalov interviewed by local TV channels and Info Agencies. In his turn he informed them on April 4, and highlighted the importance of the Day to keep the cause in the spotlight in Azerbaijan where the challenges in this field are very acute. The aim of all events was to raise awareness about mine/ERW problem and draw the community’s attention to progress towards the elimination of this menace in Azerbaijan and all over the world as well.
